President Iohannis: A Pillar of Stability and Responsibility in Romania
Ahead of the second round of the Romanian Presidential elections, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Joseph Daul, made the following statement:
“2019 has been an important year for Romania. We have seen thousands of courageous Romanians take to the streets to demand change and showed up again in massive numbers to vote in the European and Presidential elections for political representatives who will listen and act on their behalf. It has been a significant victory for Romanian democracy.
As the year ends, I wish to see another such victory with President Klaus Iohannis reelected as Romania’s head of state. Over the past 5 years, President Iohannis has been a pillar of stability and responsibility in Romania. When the Socialists continuously undermined the rule of law and weakened the judiciary on a daily basis, President Iohannis acted as a gatekeeper of Romanian credibility and legitimacy. Highly respected, President Iohannis enjoyed not only a strong credibility but also mutual trust among the European leaders. As a convinced European, President Iohannis fought hard to keep Romania on its pro-European path and make the country a reliable partner in the EU.
As a statesman, President Iohannis united all Romanians under the same vision. He made every Romanian proud of their country and he answered the Romanians’ call by taking a strong stance on defending the rule of law, an independent judiciary and by fighting against corruption. Through his initiative to organise a referendum last May, he gave every Romanian a voice and the power to decide what’s best for the country. The choice was overwhelmingly clear – Romanians chose a society based on the rule of law.
Ahead of the second round of the Presidential elections, I would like to wish him a clear electoral victory for a strong second mandate. We count on the unity of the Romanian centre-right. I am convinced that Romania is in the best hands possible with President Iohannis and Prime Minister Ludovic Orban at the helm of the country. Unlike the socialists, I trust they will serve their citizens and they will deliver the solutions and the opportunities the Romanians have been asking for.”
